Basic Information
Reading Material
Purchase a student subscription to the Wall Street Journal. You may purchase an 8-week subscription. In addition to the readings listed below, I expect you to read the editorial pages (the last three pages of section A) every day.
Summary: At the start of each new article, I will randomly select one student to summarize each article. The selected student will take five to ten minutes to present a detailed summary of the article. The student should not provide his own thoughts at this time. The student may, where appropriate, provide background information or data that he feels is relevant to the article and helpful in providing context to his summary. Because students will be selected at random, it is possible that you may never be called to provide a summary. It is also possible that you may be called more than once to provide a summary. Without incurring penalty, you may decline to provide summary no more than twice during the course. For each summary, you will receive a score of 0, 1, or 2 points.
Discussion: Following the summary, students will engage in moderated discussion. Students I will keep track of who contributes meaningfully. Students’ grades for classroom discussion will be based on the quantity and quality of their contributions. Students should feel free to express their opinions. I will neither add points for opinions with which I agree nor deduct points for opinions with which I disagree. My criteria for judging your opinions are: the clarity with which you express them, the quality of the thought reflected in them, and the quantity of verifiable information underlying them. For each substantive comment, you will receive a score of 1 point.
